Bit of a 'looker' now got a 'stable mate'

#1 Post by bigbob » Tue Jul 09, 2013 3:25 pm

Few shots here of a bow that i was building for some one. I used exactly the same stack as a previous one at the same weight. It had all 'boo core , this 'un has Red Palm as the belly lams as well as in the riser together with Hairy Oak and Osage accent strips. Haven't had time to put through my chrono as I have been building its replacement which hopefully will be at the required weight! Its not finished yet but will be available if there are interested person/s out there. It really is an eye catcher I feel.
Nearly finished the replacement one. Its still a whisker over weight as yet and only put a coat of finish on to highlight any flaws that need addressing. It's probable an even better looking bow. as I mentioned the first bow will be available once finish coated, and can letter it with the owners name before hand if desired. These two bows are fairly unique and guaranteed to turn heads. The price is pretty reasonable for a custom bow , although mass produced bows can be had a lot cheaper.Pm if interested.

The red Palm is a bit of a pain to work as its a bit like Wenge and needs to be sanded in one direction and needs grain filling but the end result is worth it. [ thanks big fella!] Forgot to mention the stats for the bow which are 45# at 28, and 66 NTN, comes with 12 months warranty, new string by Steve Wallace and a string keeper.

Thanks Daniel, Tom, Otis and Ronster. Yeah Otis, PNG natives use Black palm in their biows as you would no doubt be aware of.Not sure how they shape it regarding the fibrous nature of the grain. Ronster somewhere down the track I am going to build a 'curve or two and you guys who can't handle a real bow can try them!!!

Noob question: Is the white-ish timber in the middle the bamboo?

Depends on what you mean by middle Tom! Middle of the limb veneers is all bamboo, both natural and 'coffee'. Middle of the riser is Hairy Oak, but what you might mean the two narrow strips in the centre of riser and that is Osage Orange.

thanks Rod, some is the bit you gave me. some is a bit I got from Lazarides .Did come up well. Tom your diagram is partly correct. It is as you labelled it, except that the Hairy oak is the reddish brown centre piece of wood. The outer pieces where you have your arrow labelled hairy oak is the Red Palm

Best advice is read , read and read--- and absorb! Whether its on this forum, or any others. Do what your doing, never be afraid to ask questions as most people are only to happy to give advice.A laminated glass bow is probably the least challenging bow to make, particularly compared to self bows which are very challenging and require a great deal of skill and application.

Just the curves to put in, is it Bob

But really Bob, I have seen your bows close up and fired one of them at Caboolture, and with honesty I say that they are as good a shooting bow and a good looking bow. Great work!

why Ronster you'l have me blushing.I am warming more and more to the idea of a recurve but I'd like to sell this house, move into another with a BIG SHED and get myself properly organised first. Meanwhile I will probably make another deflex/reflex but a shorter version around 62'' - 64''

Hi Bob,

Your bows are coming along very nicely, do you look back and think about the first one that you made?

I have noticed that you are using a fair amount of clear glass and I was wondering if you were having problems with blemishes etc.

I sometimes do just that Daryl, and never fail to realise each time that it was only through the very generous help of your good self that I even got to grind the lams for my first 'monster' -'errr' -bow. then it was the ongoing help from your good self, Rod and Jeff particularly that has enabled to get even this far with my bows. As you would know in this caper the more you know, I think the less you know, but never be afraid to ask for advise.
Forgot to answer your question. I get my glass from a small supplier in the US. and he hand picks all his glass. I did have a black strip arrive with deep scratches and he supplied a replacement with my next order.

Bob,

I was interested in the clear glass, are you getting the little opaque patches that appear in the clear glass on a fairly regular basis?

At the moment I am reluctant to use the clear glass that I have in stock because I do not know what the outcome will be.
