Re: Sourceing Glue
Binghams or Three Rivers to name a couple to get Smooth-On from.
What problems are you having with the 24hr Araldite? It will work but it is not so good once the ambient temperature gets up to summer temps as it can start to soften under high temps (60 degrees from memory but not 100% on that).

Re: Sourceing Glue
The Glue that I use is called RESORCINOL, I use it on furniture and repairs, have used it in building a small dingy, OK its a marine base glue. and so far it hasn't let me down. As for making bows i can't give you an honest answer. It's not a cheap product, but I use it all the time when working with wood. Cheers Roadie.
Re: Sourceing Glue
Thanks for the replies, stickbow the araldite seems to let go,it is quite old stock so i will replace with something more suitable.

Yeah it isn't an epoxy that I would use but be aware that all epoxies do have a shelf life and I for one won't use it if it is over twelve motnhs old.frogman wrote:stickbow the araldite seems to let go,it is quite old stock so i will replace with something more suitable.

Re: Sourceing Glue
Hi Grant, alot of old bows were made with Resorcinol. I dont know how good it is bonding glass to wood but it is definatley suitable for wood to wood bonding in bows. Re: Sourceing Glue
Hi Frogman, ask them if they can post it to you rather than courier. Otherwise try John Clarke from Ausbow industries as he stocks it and will definately post it to you for less than $55 dollars from South Australia . Steve
Re: Sourceing Glue
$55 for postage! You could have that parcel airmailed to you from half way round the world for less!

Frogman,
Look around for boat building suppliers or fibreglass specialists they generally stock Techniglue CA, I get mine for such a supplier.
Roadie,
Where do you get your RESORCINOL from I understood it is not available in Oz?
Craig.

Techniglue is classed as a corrosive so extra precautions are needed (ie - cost) when sending it by post.Hamish wrote:$55 for postage! You could have that parcel airmailed to you from half way round the world for less!
Buy it locally or find someone that will send it by normal parcel post.
Re: Sourceing Glue
G'day Frogman, I would use the Techniglue rather than the araldite. Resorcinol is the best glue for glueing timber to timber but it wont glue fibreglass to timber. I prefer technique over the smooth-on as thechniglue is water wash up. Clarkie will sell it to you. I have used techniglue for years now and no problems with it at all....Glenn Newell on Kims computer.....

Here is a link to the data sheet for Techniglue:
http://www.atlcomposites.com.au/files/e ... ue_r60.pdf
Note the HDT (Heat Distortion or deflection Temperature) of the various hardeners and whether or not they have been 'cooked' after the initial cure.
I don't use Techniglue but I use another product made by ATL composites. Here is a link to their web site:
http://www.atlcomposites.com.au/atl_composites/
You should be able to purchase Techniglue from any retail outlet which sells glass fabric, and the various adhesives such as epoxy or polyester resins. A good source of supply is firms which cater to boat builders.
Here is a link to the data sheet for West System 105:
http://www.westsystem.com/ss/typical-ph ... roperties/
Compare the HDT of West System 105 with Techniglue. You can convert the temperatures from Farenheit to Celsius here:
