Hey Gents,
I'm travelling to Japan very soon for a holiday
and was considering bringing a bow back with me.
I was just after some advice/opinions of anyone who has done this or similar from another country before??.. If possible - will it be worth the hassle?.. immporting/customs laws?.. Try posting it back to myself instead?..
Any help is appreciated.

I think the best thing would be to get in touch with customs and ask them.

Posting the bow back to Australia wouldn't be viable, as Australia Post has set a maximum length on all parcels entering the country and it's just a bit over 1 metre. The post office in Japan wouldn't accept it, as they would always look up the restrictions that apply to each country first.
There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

I have done this in 2010.
Lewis and I went to Tokyo and got a Yumi.
When I look at out tickets back it had on them that anything over 2m had to be perbooked with the airline and I had not done this, so I asked the shop if they could send it back for me.
This was "not a problem" and the bow arrived a couple of days after we got back.

They were very helpful. If I get a chance this trip I will call in and see them again.

Update; I bought a Yumi and got it back safe and sound into the country! I simply checked it in with the airline (Japan Air) however I needed to pay an oversize luggage fee (10,000 yen) for luggage over 2.0m long. I felt this was quicker and cheaper than posting it back and with how the people at Asahi packed it up in the box felt like it would be safe enough with the rough baggage staff.
Although!! My only advice for anyway buying a bow over seas; make sure the string is included with the bow! haha I got home and excitedly unpacked my bow only to find there was no string. After a quick email inquiry I found out that strings are sold separate and I now have one on it's way in the mail.

When we got ours it came with a string and we also bought a spare as well.

Ohh How i'm interested in this thread! As i'm looking to get my own Yumi and then possibly start making and supplying Yumi ya (Japanese Arrows).

Hey Ranger,
I got a fibreglass laminate bamboo core for about $500 mate - full fibreglass was about 400 and a carbon fibre about 600. That's from memory though so don't quote me.haha Spent almost 200 on a dozen basic bamboo arrows as well.
Hey Anthony! I'd be very interested if you started supplying trad arrows!.. I have a feeling I'm going to go through mine pretty quick before I get the hang of shooting from the right hand side of the bow.

While I'm here - thought I'd post a pic of a range I shot at in Kyoto;
The range was a little small but it was great to experience a different style/cultures archery! It was also very interesting to shoot from a seated position.
