Best Place in OZ to Live/Hunt/Shoot/Fish?

#1 Post by erron » Mon Apr 24, 2006 7:02 pm

Just about to start considering a permanent move to the country (in the next year or two), and have a couple of places in Victoria in mind. Was wondering what thoughts others had on what constituted the perfect place for a budding bowhunter and his artsy wife to settle down in?

Yeah, I know, the sting is in the artsy tail, :D

Still, any ideas?

That's a hard one to answer mate. There's plenty of great "out and out" hunting locations, but when you must combine it with the arty aspect, it starts to bring the field right down.

Bright (Victoria) is a nice little town. It has a sophisticated side with many nice restaurants. It's absolutely beautiful year round, but particularly so in autumn, surely enough to arouse the inspiration in any artist.

The Ovens river flows through town. This pretty freestone river cries out "trout", as do the various tributaries that flow into it.

The snowfields are just up the road and of course, best of all, you've got sambar in the hills in every direction.

Land prices are fairly steep for a country town. A house in this town would appreciate in value very nicely, I'd say.

You could do a lot worse. It will be interesting to see what places others recommend. :)

Poppy for an Ol' Fella I'll pay that one - sorry Erron.

Mick,

Jude and I and the kids went to Bright when we visited Col Graham some years ago and I can still remember how pretty it was. It was autum and for us Queenslanders seeing the changing coulours of the trees was awesome. I have some nice photos of the place.

For Queensland I think the Sunshine Coast hinterland - Montville, Melany etc - would be somewhere you would like. I'm sure if Glenn sees this he would agree. Hunting wouldn't be that far away.

It would be hard to find a more Arty place in Queensland than the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, with plenty of hunting in the Mary Valley...Glenn...

Paul, that really is funny :D

Thanks for the feedback all, I was just ruminating the other night. It will be a year or so away if it does happen.

Sunshine Coast hinterland really does sound interesting, might have to have a little hol up that way and check it out...

cheers,

Erron

Hi Erron

Well, it depends on what sort of "Art" your wife is interested in.

In many ways for me I would see Weipa as being reasonable close to heaven. But in other ways Armidale appeals.

And Brisbane is reasonable good.

I think it depends on what you like. Some of the bigger Art shows skip Brisbane - I keep on telling myself I must make the effort to go to Sydney to see th Archibald. But Brisbane is still big enough for many things.

The performing Arts are particularly strong.

If you really want "Art' then it would hard to beat Melb' or Adelaide or someone close enough that it easy enough to get to.

But if what you want is a strong Art's community (especially in the more traditional arts) then the Sunshine Coast is good.

And the good thing about Qld is that it does not get that cold - although sometimes the climate being beautiful one day and perfect the next does become wearing.

Now taking all that into account it would hard to beat the Sunshine Coast Hinterland or the area around Eumundi. And they really are only 40km apart.
Grahame.

Do I detect a slight leaning towards heading up north? If so, that's fair enough I suppose. It would be nice to have a little more sunshine.

What about Coffs Harbour? You would have Matt  , great ocean and estuary fishing, top class bass and eastern cod fishing and even some reasonable trout fishing up around Ebor (I think that's what the place is called). Inland you would have fairly close access to some very productive hunting areas in the New England ranges and the red deer hot spots aren't far away either.

I don't know about the art aspects of living in Coffs, but I'd imagine there would be plenty of avenues.

I've always liked Coffs Harbour, it's a nice little place.

It definately is in a good region mate for the outdoor stuff. 2 things I have found though - 1, plenty of 'alternatives' not necessarily keen on hunters - 2, the centre of town can be a real pain in the ass in terms of traffic for 'only' a town.

I am off to get yelled at some more up the hills, fingers crossed someone says 'Yes mate, plenty of pigs/goats/deer, get into em!" (Wish wish wish!! :) )

Gaday Erron..I thought you were heading over seas...Here in Batemans Bay there are plenty of arty places within close range, plenty of fishing opportunities but a major drawback is that the hunting is a lttle light on but a few hours drive and you can always find something....

Coffs Harbour sounds awfully like Daylesford: very left/pink dollar/pretentious artist types who think animals left to their own devices die in an animal hospital with little animal nursies running around making their last days comfortable  Maybe something close by with a touch more feral to it, so a town or two away...

Sparra, the overseas thing kind of died, which all round isn't such a bad thing :? Anyway, I guess the sort of spots suggested here are an excellent 'consolation' prize?

:)

hey erron, the marysville type area is a top spot in vic i reckon. plenty of beautiful scenery, good hunting and friendly people. there still is alot of that artsy sort of stuff around but most people ive talked to in the area love hunters. its also not too far from melbourne if you ever need to drive in for any reason. if you want further out alexandra and taggerty and places a bit further north are also great. 8)

Thanks Humphrey, I have indeed considered that area, as it also contains some of the best trout fishing going 8) It is certainly high on the list :!:

cheers,

If you want to head up to around Canberra, southern NSW, NSW Alpine or South Coast, then http://allhomes.com.au is usefull. Prices around here are a bit silly in places and it seems a lot of Townies are buying places on hobby farm blocks driving prices up and leading farmers to subdivide and cash in. One thing to be wary of around here is that some block don't have building permission.

Mate, can't speak for other states, but as for Victoria rural, how about:
Tambo Valley, 3 acre block $29,5000 / Central Victoria (Dunolly) 3.5 acres with house $172,000 / Bairnsdale 5 acres and house $175,000 (info from Earth Garden magazine). Contact people (and bowhunting clubs) around Ballarat/Bendigo- I think your missus will find "her people" there and you will definitely find blokes to hunt and fish with. GOOD LUCK!!

Hey Ant, I remember Earth Garden mag - I've got the first edition tucked away somewhere still! It sure is a good place to look for non ripoff deals on country properties :)

There's just so many places really, aren't there :?: Plenty to mull over during the coming Winter cold

w00t!

I was going to suggest that some communities "specialise" in some arts, like glass blowing, wood or leatherwork. However the indoors painting arts are pretty well transportable.
