Studying history requires me to read quite a lot of texts by ancient writers.(Who'd've thought? )
Anyway, reading Herodotus, I came across this method of cooking an animal with basically no utensils, but best of all, no washing up!
To avoid a whole heap of quoting I just attached a scan of the page.
I've also read a similar description somewhere in the bible, but I can't remember where, although I've looked, buit it is rather a big work, so don't go too harsh on me for not footnoting that reference.
I don't know wether animals in Asia have different bones to here or what but I've never seen a bone maintain combustion on its own before. Maybe they burnt the fat on the bones. I dunno.
The thing about herbivores is, they've all got rather large stomachs in proportion to their body size, which means you could fit a fair bit of meat in the stomach. Of course this method could be modified: You wouldn't have to put the innards in the stomach, add some herbs/spices and maybe some veggies and you've got yourself a good way to prepare some stew over a campfie with little hassle of washing up!
This also has 'survival situation' potential as well.
Just some thoughts fom another culture on how to do things differently. I've been meaning to post this message for ages, I'm such a lazy uni student!

Aaah.. good old Herodotus..
I believe at the beginning of book 4 on the Scythians he also has an interesting method to milk a horse.. something about blowing up the anus with a hollow straw?... so your blinded slaves can make you some cheese.
I LOVE the classics.
More recipes please yeoman.
Mick.

"One has been a bad spectator of life if one has not also seen the hand that in a considerate fashion - kills." Nietzsche.
hmmmmmm, I've read that, and wonder how many blind slaves got five shades of snot kicked out of them as they tried to ilk horses in this manner Physiology was, of course, not widely understood among the Greeks and Scythians.
I know a guy who made bacon from wombats. How's that for a recipe?
