first points from rock.
i've been knapping again this weekend and i came up with some points out of rock for the 1st time.
the white one is my 1st ever rock point, it is novaculite. the other one is a nice little obsidian point. i'm going to have to order some more shafts to put them on. it'll be a treasured experience to take something with them!

Good on ya, Clint. Good luck with 'em.
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

Re: first points from rock.
thanks guys.
otis- no, i need a bunch of lighter spined shafts for these points. i'll have to shoot them from my 54# limbs. all the shafts i have now are spined for my 69# limbs with heavier points. i've got all wet season to get them sorted.
rod- yep, there's at least 8hrs worth in these two. i just sit there and chip away.

Re: first points from rock.
Clinton, a job well done. But can you please explain just how you go about crafting such beauties or could you give me a pm or a quick call on 0458 08 4493 with some advice as to finding assistance in the art of knapping. I have a number of old pieces of obsidion dark glass that I'm working with but so far I have many, many pieces lying about without any type of a result. I know I'm doing something wrong, but at this stge what it is Is the "novaculite" simular to the man made white porcelain we all know and love again, great looking knapped heads..........Bill
Re: first points from rock.
bill, clint put me onto the primive archer site. it is excllent, and lots of helpful people. do some reading over there. if you search back through the pages you will find tool pics and methods of use.
http://www.primitivearcher.com then go to the message board at top of screen, and then flinknapping down left side.
also some basics reading

what otis said. primitive archer and paleo planet are two great sites for primitive stuff. you tube knapping videos are great reference too.
the novaculite i used is from 3rivers. it is heat treated and knapps really well. not sure what porcelain is like so i don't know?
these are my tools- ishi stick, copper bopper, hand pad. not shown is an abrader of some sort.

Re: first points from rock.
They're fantastic! You'll have to fix them in place with grass tree resin too to give them that extra bit of authenticity. Usually get grass tree resin found around the trunk of the plants, smells a bit like frankincence when heated too.

Re: first points from rock.
at the moment i'm using pine pitch to haft my points. it's a blend of pine resin, charcoal, ground up manure and bee's wax. i would like to try spinefex resin as i've heard it's really strong. i don't live in the desert though.
