Tri lam ELB.......
Had this stave in the corner of my garage for a year or so.......it started as a 72" Warbow experiment, but the Malas on the belly chrylas on the bottom limb. It was pulling 90 odd pound at 30" but it was too harsh to draw, and the tiller was rubbish. I thought a couple of weeks ago I coul...

Re: Osage bow the third (build along)
Hi Cam, Dennis is spot on. If your had a board behind your tiller with Grids, lined up with your bow, I think you may find it easier to see these small discrepancies. Once I designated a place on my garage wall and Drew grids all over it, my tillering became alot better...................Heaps bette...

Re: American Ash Warbow...........
Finishing off today, Also resurrected a couple of old staves I put in the "too hard basket". Now I will have a few bows to take to lilydale with me! TRi LAm Malas Bow on the left had a couple of bad Chyslas on the bottom limb, it was way to powerful for a 72" ELB, so I lowered the pou...

Re: Advice needed for equipment
Nah, seriously,,,,,, A good spoke shave, a hand plane, A 1 metre Steel ruler, a square, A set of cabinet scrapers, A chisel, a sharpening stone for chisel and spoke shave, Flat and round files, copious amounts of sand paper, a belt sander is really handy but not essential.............. tite bond III...

Sanded and fitted horn tips yesterday. Shaped them today, put the bow back on the tiller. An hour later, We have 88lb @ 30" with an 1" and 1/2 of set.
Dont know if I'm happy with the tiller.

Re: First Crack at a warbow (build along)
Good work Colin, Left limb is fine, Right limb slight hinge starting 2/3 of the way round.( Right where it is adjacent to the plaster patch in the background). Having said that, The fractures in the limb may change the tiller if they get worse. If you make a bow 82" or 84", you will be abl...

Re: First Crack at a warbow (build along)
Hmmmmm......... not good Colin. By the sound of it I dont think you have done anything wrong. I tend to not use the long string now and floor tiller the stave to a low brace height, say 3 or 4 inches. Then even out the limbs, THEN put it on the tiller and wind her down. Then adjust the brace height ...

Re: First Crack at a warbow (build along)
That dark wood is common in Hickory Colin, it has never been a problem for me.......... it looks great in contrast with a coat of finish. My bow is the same at one end. All good.

Thanks Dennis. There sure is a diffence in a crowned back bow. What you have explained makes perfect sense. I love that picture of the cross section of that piece of mary rose yew. The number of growth rings astounds me. A stave of that quality now would cost a small fortune...................... if...
