Beautiful work as always Daryl.
would love to look at getting one of these in a more 'natural' look.

Hoop Pine and Peacock Feathers
So a fair few blokes over in the UK have been raving over using very long peacock feathers (8-9") on sets of war arrows for heavy bows. Sure I agree that the brown of a peacock primary feather is quite striking on the end of a tapered shaft, im not so convinced with the excessive length. Anyway...

Re: Tas oak/vic ash... backing?
Yea I prefer a backing for boards normally... I think they can tend to become brittle from kiln drying then a long time in the racks. Bamboo and hickory for an ELB would make,in interesting combo. I know Mick has a heavy one like it in the works so will be keen to see how it goes. I'm yet to try Cyp...

Re: Tas oak/vic ash... backing?
I think you will run into trouble with splinters in it as well mate but as Daryl said, its always worth a little experiment and see what happens. For heavy board bows you can always laminate 2 boards together... Have done that before with several timbers and it works fine. My favorite bow I own (105...

Re: WTB: Hickory backing strips
Thickness would depend on what your making with it mate. By the sounds of it (80" long) you're looking to make something i would like to play around with and quite heavy. If you're doing a warbow i would say 6mm thick then use a 4mm crown and put your hickory on edge grain if you can.

Longbowshop UK is where I usually get mine from. They sell Buffalo horn tips. Most times one piece in large enough to split and get 2 bow tips from.

I usually go into Carba-tec and buy it there so I get the right stuff but that's about the same price as I usually pay, if not a bit cheaper.

Re: Red oak riser question
The only time there is any section of a bow that is not under some form of stress is when the bow is un braced (and even that depends on how the bow was glued up, ie adding reflex on a belly by adding a backing places stress on the bow even when its unstrung). As soon as there is load on the bow fro...

Re: Red oak riser question
Stress is related to load not amount of bend... Stiffening the handle will reduce the strain on the handle but not the stress. Stress on the outer most fibres of a beam is determined by dividing the bending load multiplied by the distance from the neutral layer to the fibre all divided by the second...

Re: Red oak riser question
Will be interesting to see if that glue holds up. Ive never had any luck with anything but Techni-glue which is a structural grade epoxy.
Remember that even when a riser isn't "bending" there is still bending stress there, there is just no deflection (actual visible bend)

Re: Red oak riser question
The purpose of the fades is to gradually stop the bend from the limb into the handle rather than abruptly stop it (creating a hinge) so the very fine end of the fade will bend a tiny bit but stop as it thickens into the handle. What you have will make a bow of around 45-50lbs at those dimensions I b...

Well the one went a bit haywire... and by a bit I mean ALOT!! hahaha  Learned a heap from it and will be having another crack at some stage. The bow does shoot, only around 25-30 lbs (haven't checked) at 28 inches and ended up at 62"ntn (don't ask where the other 4 inches went!) Big fr...

Re: Red oak riser question
Few cents on the issues from my experiences. Is that 20lb at 7" from straight or from brace? If its from brace then that bow will be over your desired weight (provided an ideal world, 20lb at 7" with a 7" brace would mean a 21" draw and a linear curve would predict about 60lbs at...

Re: Making father and son wood recurve bows
There are scale laws that i have used in my studies at University that i can find again which will be applicable for scaling down a full size bow. You would need to scale the draw force first and use that relationship to scale the length, thickness etc. The trick would be to give yourself enough tim...

Re: Making father and son wood recurve bows
Bamboo back and a Spotted gum decking board would do the trick... Kerf cut recurves will hold far better than steamed ones. I did a thread a while back about one i made using this design and it worked really well. As Bob said, definitely check out Greybeards recurve posts. any questions just ask Colin

Re: Is this Osage
Bit short for any bow really... splicing them would give you about 32" of length which isn't really long enough for even a short bow (have to check with Cam on that tho, he makes em pretty short  ) I don't know if splicing them all together would be the best idea, though with a bamboo ...

A coat of paint will work if you don't like the colour of the back. that or try a bit of the oil on a test piece and see what it does first then if you like how it goes oil the bow as well.

Don't think its Osage mate... the growth rings aren't distinct enough... a blind fella could count the growth rings in an osage stave Could still be worth sticking some bamboo on as a back and bending it tho! Keep us posted on what you do with it.
