Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Sorry Fellas I don't have any pics and really nothing new to show. I have just been scrapping away as time permits. Still feels a little heavy but the flat spot is still in that knotty limb but it is bending more. I also have it at a fist melee brace. I will try and get some images up sooner or late...

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

I think many of us suffer from that errrr issue bigbob. Well I am still stiff on that limb, I need to find a scale tomorrow and just see where I am at. With the gizmo my lines are slowly creeping down that limb. I am very close to my draw weight it feels. I can pull it to my anchor and my arm holdin...

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Kimall, I understand it well enough, with out a scale it is a bit difficult to for me to just guess. I know that the bow design and wood should handle more weight. I am not a he-man by know means I don't think I can draw it to hurt it. The tree just scares me I have lost my first two attempts at bow...

You are a talented man. If I ever decide to make a glass bow I know I will have to pic your brain. I am just trying to get that selfbow done. Looking really good.

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Thanks Jeff,
I really don't know if it is going past it but it feels like it. I don't have anyway to check it right now, I would rather tiller for what seem heavier then lighter.
Thanks again,
Kelly

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Ok I have her pulling to about 21" on the tree. Still looking stiff on the outer third of knotty or left limb. I pull it further in hand though, the tree makes me nervous. I bet I got it pulling 24" in hand, dont know what the weight is. We are in the process of closing down this part of t...

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Ok I strung her up and here is how the string is tracking. A lot of the twist is out of the limb also. This is the string across the handle. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/gillk/overhandle6-21-11.jpg and from the end http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/gillk/6-21-11.jpg So I guess now it ...

They always say one mans trash is another mans treasure, but until now I never really understood it. Now that is some vision and imagination to pull that off. Nice Job and a nice looking quiver.

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Yep jeff and that is a small one. I took the clamps off after letting it set of about 24 hours. Now I will let it set a few days then string it up and see where that string is tracking. I am going to start on another stave. Need to get it down as close to a bow shape as I can. I am sure I can get it...

I will heat that end tomorrow and work on getting that out. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/gillk/Clamped.jpg Here is the pick of my hea...

Bigbob you aussies are true allies in this crazy world and I have met a few of your countrymen here in Iraq the past. There were a few here when I got here in kirkuk but I have not seen any for a while. OK I have her pulling 48lbs at about 19". Now the twist is still in it. I have been told it ...

Thanks Bigbob that gizmo helps with that. Jeff I have been told by other dont worry about just yet get it pulling to about 20" and it may tiller out. If it does not by then heat may need to be added. So we shall see. I have her pulling about 12" on the tree now, and maybe a little bit more...

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

ok gents here is some more. That little gizmo is a great tool for the wood bows guy. you can use it to find center of the snakiest stave, and in this uses find where you need to scrap and what needs to be left alone. Ok I have worked on it a little more and thought I should show the gizmo in use. th...

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Thanks for the kind words gents here you go I think this is progress now. Ok today was a true lessons learned. I have been using Para cord or 550 cord as my string. Well I knew it stretched but not how much. So today I compared the 550 cord string with the string on my long bow, and the strings were...

Ok Rob I will bit, my bid is one osage bow errr mostly done. And since it is my first try at osage and only my third try at a bow period, I think i have just about as much labor as in mine as yours. :D
But I really am looking foward to seeing it done yours and hopefully mine.

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Ok I think I need to heat and straighten the limbs. I shorten the string. Now it is pulling further from the handle. The gap between the handle and string is growing to the side. The string is off the belly the length of the bow. Not much but it is. This first pic shows the string along the length o...

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

Thanks gents, I know it is slow i make about 20 scraps per limb a day. That keeps me from rushing it, I am just trying to get it to a low brace. Once there I will post pics. Then I think it will be time for another round of heat to get the string closer to center and get some of the twist out of the...

Re: thought Yall might like this, My osage adventure. Update

I am still slowly scraping the limbs getting it to bend. I think I have learned when floor tillering dont be afraid to make it bend. Just thought I would pop in for a quick up date. As soon as I get closer to my draw I will get pics up.
