Re: Which Longbow?
There are some interesting comments in the video on shooting the different style bows. I believe this video appears to show the difference in handle shape rather than limb profile. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PHh8mxg-ys When people mention their Hill style bows I have noticed that the handle se...

Re: Which Longbow?
The handles of the bows featured in the videos appear to be shallower and longer than the original style hill bows. I believe that if the limb timing is correct back set should have little effect on the feel of the bow. Interesting of the use of the term ASL - American Semi Longbow. What is ASL in a...

Which Longbow?
Whilst checking out some traditional type web sites there was a post by an archer looking at getting a Howard Hill longbow and he asked if they were any good. Quite a few of replies were less than favourable. Looking for some positives I found the following sites. Limb profile description is mixed u...

Re: TAA Proposed Equipment Guidelines 2020
Re reading this post and TAA equipment definitions refreshed my memory as to why I do not attend Association shoots. The bows in the illustration are of an approximately 6,000 year old design the only difference being the materials used. * Danish Flatbow Compilation.jpg * Limb profile consists of wi...

Hi Matt, You may like to check the following link; https://www.3riversarchery.com/del-ma-penetrator-3-blade-glue-on-broadheads.html I can remember the old Bod Kin M A3 back 40 years or so. Blackheart Sassafras
Recently I was given some milled boards of Blackheart Sassafras and not having experience with this timber as a bow wood I needed to find its mechanical properties. * Sassafras.jpg * The Sassafras compares reasonably well to Pacific Yew and hopefully will support a pole bamboo back. I also have some...

Re: Cleaning Arlec Plastic Lamp Body
Hi Rob,
Thank you for the tip.
I had some hand sanitizer containing 75% alcohol and tried it on the lamp. Although it took a bit of rubbing the surface is almost like new.
Another rub down in a couple days should do the trick.
Daryl.

Re: Free to good home
It is above my work working skills to do it justice Making a laminated recurve may seem a daunting task but if you take time to think it through it is relatively easy to make a successful bow. After reading and understanding the instructions all starts to fall into place. A couple of dummy runs cla...

That is a very generous offer.
What draw weight did you order as this may help people decide weather they can make use of it?

Re: Bamboo backed Osage
Having a working bow is a good end result. Even for longer term bowyers of non glass bows lessons are still learnt. Just about every new bow will throw up another challenge. Think of it as a life long apprenticeship. With custom bows I tiller them to the archers actual draw length and required draw ...

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
Hi Bob, Unfortunately I scrapped the project as there was no way I could remedy the effects of the hard stiff knot area. As many bowyers have experienced there are times when the bow / stave reaches a point that it can not be saved. Clear glass out of Bingham’s is getting expensive and allowing for ...

Re: Bamboo backed Osage
The tiller is nice and symmetrical, well done. * bambooOsage.jpg * You will notice in the photo that the limb tip to string angle is almost 90 ̊. If the bow is drawn past this point the bow will start to go into stack. Longer fadeouts may help de stress this area of the limbs. From watching YouTube ...

Cleaning Arlec Plastic Lamp Body
The plastic body (green and black) of my Arlec led lamp has become sticky to the touch. I have tried liquid soap, metho and tar and bug remover without success. It has had ten or so hours of use since being purchased on 3/10/2015. When not in use it is stored in a cabinet. Being rechargeable and hav...

Jeff,
I have been watching quite a few videos on making traditional bows in Asia and the bowyers appear to prefer using traditional hand tools.
Perhaps they believe using traditional tools is the way it should be.

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
Hi Jeff, The bow is braced to 5 ½”. A few short draws indicated that there is a fair amount of draw weight left in the bow. * 17 Knot Areas.jpg * If I can resolve the issues with the knotty sections and re-tiller the limbs, steaming recurve into the tips may help compensate for loss of draw weight. ...

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
I disregarded my own advice and spent too much time using the long string. It was giving me false readings with the knot area, approximately six inches in length in the left hand limb, this area refuses to bend. Consequently the outer limb section is too soft, I may have ruined the bow. The bow can ...

Re: board bows and grain orientation
What has me confused is when I watch tutorials for selfbows (boardbows) made from a single board sourced from the hardware shop. Why no mention of ring orientation for these? No chasing a growth ring for the back, just, cut to shape and tiller. Most likely the board used in the YouTube video was ha...

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
Yesterday turned out to be quite productive. Aligning the limbs proved to be a lot easier than anticipated once I had come up with the plan of attack. With the handle of the bow firmly held in a vice an L shaped wooden block was clamped against the limb at the pre determined pivot point. A wooden st...

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
Although tedious some progress has been made. The left hand side limb is getting closer to where it needs to be but working around the hinge is slow work. In the early stages of roughing out the stave I was a bit heavy handed in this spot and now I am paying the price. Fortunately there appears to b...

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
I was not completely happy with the modification to the left limb so more work was carried out. I scraped and sanded the affected belly section and reduced the high spot on the back of the stave. Fortunately this wood can handle growth ring violation with no ill effects. This section was given a sec...

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.

Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
Working the belly of the stave has been a slow process, unlike a straight stave or one where each limb profile is similar. Re: Bidwillii Build-along.
"In the synonym, Austromyrtus is from two Latin words, australis, south, myrtus, the myrtle tree" Today I reduced the overall width and thickness of the stave. Spoke shaving the bulk of the bark enabled me to establish a new centre line and modify the limb plan. Leaving some bark on allow...
