Re: Take down 60"

Hey Steve. Still using the bamboo flooring that I got some time ago. It is bamboo and a strip of kwila. Overlays of jarrah on the belly of the limb tip and one of spotted gum just under the bolt. Hey Al. Pics will come by the end of the week as it is now that the real work starts with all the hand s...

Re: Take down 60"

Thanks guys.
Going to fit the overlays and limb reinforcement during this week.
After that it will be pretty much hand sanding and final tilering.
Then finish and more pics by the next weekend.
I will be in touch!

Take down 60"

Still lots of work to do but already gone through first tilering and it is well aligned.
Hoping for 56 - 57 pounds draw weight. Maple core, black glass.
Binghan's design with some minor modifications.

Re: Techniglue Dry Time?

Moss, I use a small home heater. I put the form on top of two buckets, cover with a black plastic and chuck the heater inside, leave for 3 hours, turn off the heater and go do something else. If I do this in the morning by 9:00 am I turn it off by 12:00 and then go out with the family. I would check...

Re: Arthritic Archer advice... :-(

I would recomend swimming and strenghtning exercises with weights under supervision .
AC joint is a bone problem so I don't think masssage would help much.
Building muscle around would help suport the joint better and help you keep your form, perhaps even improving.
Just my two cents.

Re: Making a one peice recurve

The form looks good.
I think you should get some 0.050" fiberglass and make the wood core at least 0.160". If you use only parallel lams you may get 50# on a 62" bow.
By the way, Whats the size of your handle from end of fade-out to end of fade-out?

Re: Making a one peice recurve

Moss , I don't think with that thickness you will get a 62" recurve bow of that poundage , but a lot depends on the design. What design are you going to use? Binghans, John Clark or self design? And yes, I normally use 1 taper and one parallel. My 60" recurve was made using 2" wide la...

Re: Making a one peice recurve

Hi Moss. When I make my bows I usually use two wood core laminations and then the fiberglass. In one of the bows I used three wood cores but was because of a miscalculation on the final thickness so I had to complement with a thin (0.030)wood core. It came alright and shoots very well. I imagine thi...

Re: WTB Limb bolts and brass surounds

Some lawn mower shops that sell racing kart parts may have them, including the conical washer in many colors.
The problem can be matching the tread of the bolt with the tread of the nut inserted on your riser.

Cutting nocks ...... an form of art itself within the art of making bows.
Also carving handles , that's what takes me so long to finish my bows.
But in the end , that's what makes one proud, have made a bow that's better than the last one.

That's good time to start the second .
Better luck on the next one.
Perhaps spotted gum would be a more reliable bet on self bows.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: A good example of what not to do!

This happened to me this afternoon. I was just shooting in my backyard. I had shot two sets of arrows already and was going to shoot the first arrow of the next set. After release I heard a 'plack' and went to check the bow and there it was. I was lucky this time, some time ago it happened the same ...

Hi Steve , Tex. Nice build along. Bow came out beautiful. Steve , I see that you pass the bow through the drum sander as well. Does this help with the alignment? I have seen some people doing the same thing with take down recurves and started wondering if this could help establishing a good centre l...

Re: new bow for myself

Very nice bow Rod. As Graeme said , the gluing part of build a bow is the easy part. Then comes the cleaning , shaping the limbs, first stringing , correcting any side pulling, tilering, shaping the handle, second stringing, fine tilering , shoot some arrows, sanding and finishing. After all this st...

Thanks for the good feedback guys. The bamboo flooring is hard enough to make a strong handle with a long and smooth fade out. It can be found in a good variety of colors as well. Hey Tex, the holder is actually the cut off fo the handle , I keep them for exactly this reason , so I can make a rest f...

This one took a bit of time to finish because of lack of spare time, and laziness during this same spare time.
But it is done at least, now I can give the garage a clean up to keep the missus happy.
Rod, the handle is a combination of bamboo flooring and kwila.

Re: Strings

Hi all!
Do you guys reckon that I could do this with dacron.
I have been shooting a recurve at 50# with a 14 strand dacron and after reading this tread I am thinking of a 12 or even 10 strand .
Would dacron stand the extra tension.

Re: Takedown 62" 50# @ 28"

Hi Glenn. I know what you're saying. Last year I made a 60" single piece recurve and when I went to do the recurves I used a Mastic bucket to make the curve. So the curves are turning outside almost pointing to the back of the bow. The problem is, I didn't extend the limbs or reduced the handle...
