Sorry Craig, we have found great entertainment in laughing at your predicament. Not much of a friend am I? If you read the thread out loud, it sounds like a comedy sketch.
Glad to hear that the problem is solved.

Kylie is only teasing. She knows the rules. She also knows that if she insisted, she would have to put up with me building another. She also knows that somehow the next would be bigger and more complex. Just so you can all laugh, here is a photo of the first 'shed' that I built. We planned on living...

Jeff, you are not the only one that thinks so. Kylie is threatening to turn it into guest accommodation, or rent it out as a B&B :( After a tough slog of another 10 weeks of term, I have two well deserved weeks of holidays coming up. (What, I hear some of you choking in the background). I will h...

Axel, You did the right thing. What they are doing is cruel and illegal. You are walking a fine line spending time with blokes like these. If you were not careful, you could end up being 'tared with the same brush'. I hope they don't cause you any trouble over the matter. Where are you living that b...

Grahame,
Can you get the Incra Jig in metric? Imperial is good for bows, however the metric would probably get more use for other tasks.

Re: Accurate method to set up bandsaw fence
Thanks Daryl. I hadn't given much thought to blade changes and the saw that I use at the moment is a 24" monster and changing the blade takes about 3 minutes. The fence stays put when changing blades on this saw. I must have a look at how blade changes are made on the smaller machines. Would yo...

Re: Accurate method to set up bandsaw fence
Daryl, That looks like a good solution to your problem. What type of bandsaw are you running? I am looking to tool up my new workshop and a bandsaw is one of the tools on my wish list. It seems that a 14" bandsaw is what most guys use, but I am thinking a 17" will have a bit more of a resa...

Re: My firstest everest bit of blacksmithing
Dave,
That is an excellent start. Your forging is very symmetrical and punching and drifting a hole of that size and getting it in the middle of the tool is quite an achievement.
It can take me an hour to make a simple hook!
Well done

Re: Logistics of knives
Aussie post is fine. Knives are not considered to be dangerous goods (like fireworks, flammable liquids, radioactive isotopes, poisons, etc...) therefore there is no restriction on sending them in the post. Similarly there is no licensing requirement providing that they are of not the type (daggers,...

Kylie finally brought the camera home so here are some updates. There is still a bit to go, but the end is in sight. Even though I have not yet finished the cladding I have started laying the floor so I have more room to work. The boards are 200mm wide so they go down pretty quickly. I picked them u...

Nice work Rod. I like the osage window. The curve in the sight window looks nice. Daryl, when I use Wenge, I seal it with superglue. I mask up the other parts of the bow and let it soak into the riser. The brown grain really sucks it up. Then I take to it with the sandpaper again and find that I can...

How about a sheath. You are pretty handy with the leather. I'd like to see what you come up with.

Re: Buying my first bow...
Welcome to the site Courts. Any bow that you can shoot accurately and comfortably would make a good hunting bow. You need to ensure the draw weight is sufficient for the game you wish to take. I have purchased some cheap PSE recurve bows ($140) in the past for teaching archery to school kids. Make s...

Re: the ironbarks
I used narrow leaved red ironbark (species?) on a bamboo backed bow. It followed the string as I overpowered it with the bamboo. Still a nice bow though. Might be a little slow but it sure is a lovely looking bow as the grain is almost fiddlebacked.

Re: Self bows and string follow.
Bob, You can probably find some method to reduce the amount of string follow, however I feel that it is likely that either moisture as Steve has suggested or non-optimal design has caused it. If the design is not right for the timber, I suspect that any reflex that you steam or heat into the bow may...

Many of us in archery suffer the same problem , because we can build most things our selves we under value the work other people do as well David This is an interesting point. During the time that I have been building bows, I have had some people baulk at the price and others jump at it. I do think...

I don't know Grahame. Dull timber hues finished in oils take my fancy. Tooling marks from hand tools are also more attractive to my eye than a sanded and smooth finish.
