you will not find many Japanese bows at the 70# mark. Very few were ever made that heavy even in the waring states period. Almost impossible now to get a yumi more than 45-50#. The standard for kyudo is around 30-35#

I have used VA shafts for a while now, tried several other woods including POC and prefer the VA. It is a lot tougher shaft. Tried a few methods of straightening and have settled on the hook method and carry one with my gear. Wood shafts will tend to bend over time, but I have found less return to b...

must admit that I have also recieved a bit of flak from compound shooters, on the net and at clubs. Got to the point where I started to give it back - including to Puk :) I think Comstock put it best - comounds make archery easier for beginners to enjoy. Doesn't mean it is any easier at the top leve...

Thanks Dennis, that cleared a few things up for me. I liked from the outset the wide string nocks on your tiller or tillering-stick, thingamajig. :) Just to clarify one other point then, when you tiller the bow do you mark on the string where you would normally knock your arrow and then reference it...

Interesting. I have large hands but don't heel my palm to the handle but instead have the lower two fingers away from the handle and only hold with the top two fingers. I would expect then the forces to be the same as a person with a very small hand. If the forces result in such small differences in...

A question,
I gather that the use of an arc from 25% from the fade to map the arc of the tip of the bow is due to the limb not bending like a stiff beam at a hinge at 'B'. The question is, how do you come by the figure 25%? And how much can this vary from bow to bow?

Still interested. I am working on a couple of bows already planned and then will give this a try. May have to wait until sometime in the new year though. DeltaCad is trailware now and so downloaded CadSTD instead and will see how that works out.

That is another thing I have heard goes well with bamboo bows, besides reflexing in the glue up (and why wouldn't you?) is to trapezoid the bow so the belly is wider than the bamboo backing and so can spread the force.

Maybe the first mistake here is tryong to make an ELB with a bamboo backing?

Dave, These bamboo-backed bows from 3Rivers were used because they were bamboo backed and I had had no previous experience with it. As much as anything, I wanted to see the effects of bamboo backing as my original intention. This will not prevent me using the above testing on my self bows in future...

thanks, but that was my point really. Heat treat the bamboo as you bend the bow back into reflex. It then takes on that shape and resists being bent back into deflex. From the little I have done I have found heat treated bamboo to be stiffer than before it was heat treated. With a thin lamination it...

sounds very interesting so far. Just wondering if you have thought of heat treating the bamboo as well or instead? The Japanese do heat treat their bamboo, and in my experience it becomes quite plastic and when cooled is if anything stronger. I have used heat to bend raw bamboo up a riser and it hol...

Sounds pretty positive then Dennis. A question, with that much difference between prestrung and after strung string follow do you see a change in power of the bow after being strung for a bit? I am curious if you need to use a lower spined arrow after it has been strung for a few hours as I have hea...

won't bending it backwards to reduce set also be taking the wood beyond it's elastic limit? It must be doing so as it deforms the bow.

I don't use push pull. I keep my bow arm in a fixed position from shoulder down, swing up in the first part of the draw and then settle to anchor. I find this takes out any variation in front arm position. I do not worry about pulling shoulder blades together at all and yet it seems to work. I am ef...

I have found the VA hardwood shafts to have a surprisingly strong dynamic spine. I shoot 67# at 32' and so theoretically should have a shaft around 90# spine or stronger - and have needed them when using aluminiums. However I have been doing just fine with 70-75's and 75-80's from Keith depending on...

would you be interested in selling a peice or two for risers? I have a couple of bows coming up and one Osage lamination and it would set it off nicely. Also another with purple heart lamination and a good contrast I expect.
Now do I have to beg or just post cash in an envelope :)

there are a few of us that shoot longer draw lengths - mine is about 32 inches. I agree that most of the commercial longbows can handle up to 30 relatively easy from what I have seen, but 32 is beyond most of them. As for form changing the draw length, after some discussion over the past couple of y...

ethical standards from clubs/associations

Greetings from London! Wandering around the world for a bit and only getting to read things from time to time. This stuff has been visited how often?? The function of an association or club is to bring people of a common interest together. It may or may not also state a code of conduct. In all cases...

If you like a grip that encourages consistancy in hand placement, and a reportedly very good bow then maybe you might want to look at one of these.
