Re: Wood bows and the Australian Climate
Hi Jape No idea why the bow would change shape while unstrung -- the deal with MC affecting the durability/stability is only a consideration if the bow is strung and/or drawn. The only explanation I can think of for your bow is that the end that has changed shape has expanded or contracted by differ...

Re: Wood bows and the Australian Climate
Hi Simon I think all that appear above is true. But the simple answer is that bows of any wood are more likely to break at lower MC and will take more set at higher MC. Obviously some woods are more critical at low MC than others but the local timbers show the same range of susceptibility that impor...

Re: Tight snap nocks and accuracy problems?
Hi Steve
I have seen video of an arrow with a very loose nock leave the string at the beginning of the release then the string catch up with it towards the end of the string travel -- this would have to give you erratic arrow flight as the string is unlikely to re enter the nock cleanly.

Re: I like Chinese (Bows) - Part II
Looks good Grahame --- easy to get the weight right if you rebuild with the same design but as you found, changing a bunch of things makes it difficult.
Glad it worked out for you and looking forward to seeing some more photos and testing.

Re: A Busy Bow Making Week
Hi ??? Stickandstring I can not really help you with a plan -- after a while you can just take a piece of wood or boo and guess what sort of bow it will make and work it down until it shoots. I am guessing that since you are asking for a plan that you are fairly new to bow making since wooden bows d...

Re: I like Chinese (Bows)
Hey Kevin -- That is the worst excuse I have ever heard for not making a bow -- Its not how good it turns out but the fact that you gave it a go. The test of success is whether the arrow moves forward not much else and the only bows that break before you get to use them are the ones built by people ...

I'm wIth Perry -- Foam cores with diagonal carbon and siyahs that are tubular and hollow made out of woven carbon sleeve with a bias weave so you can get it neck down tightly on your wax form that you will melt out after it cures.

Re: I like Chinese (Bows)
Hi Grahame One of the problems with the adaption of traditional designs to modern materials is -- as you have found, that you end up having to reduce the thickness to get usable draw weights and this reduction leads to torsional instability. So the message here is that you can not use the unstrung p...

Re: lamination grinder
Hi Rod When you grind you first lam -- it can be parallel -- you need to measure it at both edges with a vernier to see if it is flat or not -- you then pack the grinder where it bolts to the bench to change the angle and get it to grind flat. If the lams are thicker one side than the other the limb...

Hi Rod Lovely bow. Looks like you are really in the game now -- working on refining the bows rather than making them work. The funny part is that after you get over the initial learning curve which seems very step and move on to the refining phase you realise the first bit was easier than you though...
