Re: Australian bow woods.
Hi Steve, Thanks for clarifying the identity of the species. Most people only refer to the common name, so it is sometimes challenging to confirm the species. Particularly given in am from the west coast and unfamiliar with many of the species people refer to. To confirm, the irritating dust you re...

Re: Australian bow woods.
Nic I believe that A. Falciformis is Mountain Hickory Wattle whereas A. Implexa is the normally known as Hickory Wattle, though there also appears to at least one other that goes by the same name (namely A. Mangium ). Like Jeff I'm relatively inexperienced, so didn't figure my observations are worth...

further to Daryls tillering comments, have a look at this gizmo which should help you get a nice tiller. It is limited to circular tillers, but it has helped me tremendously!

Have you tried that thicknessing with a router? I've tried a few times but always end up in trouble somewhere. I would like to try it with the router at 90deg to the blank, but haven't got there yet. Another option would be to use a hand plane with the same kind of jig.

Re: Hollow Limb Design [HLD]
That patent has been taken over by (though not owned by) South Cox of Stalker stickbows - he bought both A+H and Dryad last year (I think?) and is now/about to offer limbs with the curved cross section options. The Push have a podcast going through the whole shebang if anyone is interested - https:/...

Re: DIY tree stand sucess
Thanks Matt I've thought about making something like that and probably will - I just like the simplicity of a bit of string and some feathers though, nothing to go flat! That's a 1970 58" Shakespeare/Root Warrior I got off a member here. The wood is a strip of oak I made up when the bottom stra...

DIY tree stand sucess
Having seen a few fox cubs getting around, plus a few flat ones on the road, I knew there was a fair chance that I'd be seeing some around home. Sure enough, doing some slashing with a self propelled mower, I spied a dark form sneaking off as I made my way out in the dusk (mowing at night is much ni...

Re: Not My First Choice of Bow Woods…But
That's the one I was thinking of, and I think there's another couple floating around on the interwebs (PA/paleoplanet?). Unfortunately I haven't been able to lay my hands on a stave of ironbark/spotted gum/stringybark yet to do a stave version, but I've laid out a board version which I plan on backi...

Re: Not My First Choice of Bow Woods…But
Nice one Daryl, that "primitive" look, both the finish and the shape is outstanding - though there's nothing primitive about them! If I remember right, didn't Glenn Newell make similar bows from ironbark staves? I picked up a couple of boards to have a go with one day and it sure is heavy ...

It is carried by cloven hoofed animals and is spread by any body fluids (and can travel through he air for several kms). Unfortunately not just ungulates, but natives as well. Looking at the list in the link, it looks like most placental animals/marsupials are potential carriers. https://www.health...

Re: Feral Game Hunting Kit
If I was to start again now, I'd seriously look at some of the cheaper ILF rigs. If you pick up a cheap(er) set, you could add a half decent set of limbs at higher poundage later when you get into hunting more. Then if you want to upgrade your riser, the limbs will cross over also. Never shot any my...

Re: Feral Game Hunting Kit
If I wanted to go for wild dogs and wild pigs as an end goal (I feel as if these two particularly are creating the most environmental damage, and the pigs have the most harvestable material (MAYBE?!) am i on the wrong track with a take-down traditional? Should I be looking to move to a high poundag...

Re: Techniglue
Daryl so the three names I've found (Techniglue CA, Techniglue CA Gel and Techniglue R60) are all the same product going from your TDS? I would go with the smooth on, but my bow building may be curtailed severely shortly and I don't want to end up with a litre of glue I can't end up using (at $100 a...

Is there any difference between the CA and R60? Or is it just a re-badging/new name/replacemen etc.?
Thanks

2- Once I have 50lb+ limbs I will purchase some much heavier, more durable arrows with some proper broadheads for deer/water buffalo/ kangaroo s and other larger permit game. WOAH - NO native animals are legal to target with a bow (sharks/rays up and 'wild dogs' up north aside). 3- I will probably ...

Sure, but we'd have to do it properly - I work in an industry that has strict bio-security rules so I'm not really up to just posting seeds. You're in WA right? If you're still interested, let me know and I'm more than happy to package some up, and possibly some cuttings if it works.

Thanks Daryl, I remember that thread from earlier and is one of my inspirations to give splicing a go. Thanks guys, I think it was Napoleon that said he preferred his generals "lucky rather than good" and I'm certainly in that category  Honestly, I suspect that most of this is sub-par bow wood as it is. It's pretty thin ringed and only one log is reasonably straight and branch free, so...

Driving past "my local" Osage plantation, I noticed the tops had fallen out of a couple of trees and there was a large tree that had fallen over the fence. A quick phone call to the farmer got the go ahead, so I headed off with chainsaw in tow. Managed to get a half a dozen half decent pie...

Osage offcuts
I'm in the process of making some charcoal for my old man and started throwing in some of my osage offcuts then realised they might be of use to people. The timber has been down for a few years now and should be completely stable and would be good for tip overlays, knife scales etc. The attached pho...

Thanks Gents. Actually this is my 3rd attempt at a kids bow, the other two I blew up from rushing so this time I actually slowed down and shaped/tillered it like a full size and it paid off.
Have some leave coming up soon, so hopefully will get a bow or two shaped and shooting at least

Made up a bow for my 5yo old daughter today from a new timber for me, a local wattle that goes by 'bloodwood'. I can't find any species specific name as yet, which isn't that helpful as there are plenty of other 'bloodwoods' here in Oz. The outer white sapwood comes off easily with a draw knife and ...

Yep I've got at least 1 Tom McDonald string and I'm very happy with it, I'd buy more but I've started building my own. I replaced the nock point on it, but that's because I like a very small one other than that it's still going strong after a lot of use/abuse Plenty of options too; Flemish, endless ...

I did get out chasing the 'easter' bunny yesterday as well. The weather was much kinder, almost perfect shooting weather with sunny and calm conditions - no excuse for a less than stellar round (damn!). Started in reverse order this time, with the 15m target first. First was a little off but the sec...

Managed to get out at the end of the day, weather was.....unhelpful, showers and strong winds. After last w/e shambles with a soggy target block and wet paper, I taped the printout to the side of a box and put my kick-target (soccer ball stuffed with 1.5 pool noodles) behind the 10 ring. First bunny...

Stephen I've noticed that the tape will leave a residue on the shaft, but I've never seen any damage. I do the same but just layer wine cartons (work in a winery) and then strap down with a couple of cheapo ratchet straps or pallet strapping, when it ends up getting chewed up I just toss the cardboa...
