Re: Australian Yew English Longbow
a MASSIVE thanks to Neil, cannot thank you enough for the opportunity to make and own this awesome stick and string! You're very welcome  I'm just pleased to see the timber done justice. And you've certainly achieved that - a great job! The way that grain slides across the belly... Beautif...

Re: First finished and mini-review of bow making course
Thanks for your kind words, Steve. I am happy to help out other people as & when I can - that is what makes for a healthy community in any hobby or craft. To clarify, I don't present myself as a bowyer, nor do I organise these courses. The courses are organised & run by the local Council, I ...

Flyonline Steve is a true gentleman - he came up to my place and left me half the Osage we milled! This picture is what was left about halfway through divvying up the boards. The thicker, meatier boards are out of shot. IMG_0006 smaller.jpg When I bump into board members over the next few months I'l...

Re: Cypress Experiment
Neil, I will agree it is very Elastic as the material properties suggest but I think the slightly lower density and MoR will make it a little inferior to Yew. Though it will be a wicked comparison (even though the Yew bow will be a tad heavier hopefully :D ) I also think the structure of the timber...

Either of those should work and like Sabinus said, if you're going to shoot off the hand, make sure your fletchings are 100%.flyonline wrote:Shape a piece of timber and glue onto the side? I plan on doing a leather handle so I suppose a leather flap is also an option.

Re: Cypress Experiment
Good stuff, Colin! I'm really glad to see we're getting a picture of how this stuff works at the higher draw weights. When I get you that Yew stave you'll have to do a comparison of the two timbers - the numbers are remarkably close, Cypress *might* well be the Aussie answer to that particular timber.

I think this might be the same guy who took a year to get me my arm guard & knife... He does great work - really great work - but the very nature of commissioning things from people who build as a hobby means that they don't have the time to rush orders. I know I'm the same when people (occasion...

Hi Nezwin, What epoxy do you use to laminate with or to glue a wood backing on? I did fine with the spotted gum board – against you advise I made it without backing…my bad… It popped a splinter on full draw 29” at about 45pls after six arrows…if I had a backing on I now would be working on my secon...

Reading between the lines, this means you're having Ironbark fail in compression with a Hickory backing? Wow! I've been getting Hickory & White Oak backings splinter with Celery Top Pine & White Cypress belly's on short working limbs - I can't imagine what you must be doing to get compressio...

Re: Another new bow
This is a beautiful bow, Dave. A real credit to you. This, along with the other bow you've posted, demonstrate the usage of White Oak as a sound backing material. It also supports Tim Bakers claim that White Oak is not far off Hickory as a good backing - to be able to work with an Ironbark belly, it...

Good job on the save, Dave. As you pointed out - a lower poundage bow is better than no bow at all.

Yep, have epoxy and have used it to laminate timber and glass before so good to go :handgestures-thumbup: Have various weights but will most likely use 4oz s-glass which is beautiful stuff to work with and stronger than standard e-glass. Sounds like you may have built some old-skool surfboards... U...

Re: Help point another beginner in the right direction
Thinking ahead, I have a moderate amount of glass and resin on hand, and am used to working with it so that's no issue. Am I better off laminating it on the spliced billets before pre-shaping in any way or on the shaped bow before tillering? Glass cloth & resin makes a functional passive backin...

Cheers, Bob! When I saw the purples, greys, yellows & blues in the Black Wattle I immediately thought of you glass bows and how good it would look in one of yours - I might have to send a piece up. My nearest mill is an hour or so away, which isn't too far, but the guy who 'runs' it is pretty un...

This isn't exactly making bows, but it does contribute to making bows so I thought that some on the forum might be interested. A few months ago I was fortunate enough to purchase (for a very, very reasonable price) a small 5.5HP petrol-powered horizontal bandsaw mill at a local clearing sale. With a...

Re: Help point another beginner in the right direction
With regards to the overlays how thick would I be aiming for? 1/8" should do, more if you want a thicker/heavier handle. These will also need ramps/fades incorporated, as much for aesthetics than anything. I usually aim for a 4" flat section (2" either side of centre) where the hand ...

Beautiful bow, as usual, Bob. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to takedowns & mosaics, so forgive me if this is a stupid question... The mosaic looks like it runs vertically down the centre of the riser but when you compare the difference in the pad length from the mosaic, they look uneven. Is ...

Re: Help point another beginner in the right direction
I get to work with the finished product  Living the dream! Boards I have on hand are 40x9x900mm, but I can get 50x7(?)x900. Just realised though that I forgot to allow for a hole in the end of each board, so workable length is more like 875. 9mm (a bit under 3/8") might be a bit thin to ...

Some nice White Oak should make a lovely bow. Might also be good for a backing material, if you get some timbers that are appropriate.

I use http://www.packsend.com.au/ for overseas (and domestic, if I ever had a need) couriering. A PVC pipe with end fittings is about $50 but you are assured of a safe package, pretty much. I've never sent bows to the States but I've sent packages twice to Canada at about $150 a shipment. Once was a...

Re: White Oak backed White Cypress Laminate Bow
The bow looks great Nezwin. A+ for aesthetics. Mechanically the design had me worried as the tip wedges transfer work to the inner limb that already takes the lions share of the stress. Perhaps consider building the bow without tip wedges, as the stress is inherently low close to the tip due to the...
