Re: I need a fletching jig.....

I've done a quick search on here and seen the "dot" method of setting out fletches and may give that a go. Can someone tell me when you buy feathers are they sorted as left or right hand? Or do you need to work that out for each lot?

I need a fletching jig.....

Hi guys. I'm gearing up to make some arrows, the cheap bamboo kind first up, and need a fletching jig. I know very little about them so would appreciate advice on which model to get. I don't need top of the range, just one that works. If anyone has one laying about they would like to get rid of that...

Re: Cheap as Chips Bamboo arrows.

Your local Bunnings must be more upmarket than mine. I had a look in the nursery/landscaping section and they had packets of stakes either 60cm (too short) or 90/120cm. The sizes varied wildly and I think price was around $9. Might have to try another store. Hopefully petrol in finding them will cos...

Thanks Daryl, only hassle is I don't have a bandsaw. My BIL does have one but I think it's on the blink, will check it out.

Re: Splitting a bamboo pole

Morgan thanks for sharing your experience. The machete I was thinking of getting is a bolo style with weight forward, not a single bevel though. I've got a straight bladed draw knife. I thought it might be a bit thick though. Thoughts?

Re: Splitting a bamboo pole

Hi Steve, thanks for the info. I've got a big old knife somewhere I might have a go with. Otherwise I've been eyeing off a machete lately, could be the excuse to buy one. As to splicing the bamboo, I was thinking that you'd be able to see a diagonal line if you were looking at the back of the bow wh...

Splitting a bamboo pole

Hi All. I picked up a stick of Moso several weeks ago and looking to split it down for use as backing on a bow I'll make soon. The pole is slightly oval in section and about 90mm dia average. It has a minor crack around 200mm long running along the length. It's about 2.5 long but I'll dock around 70...

Re: Goatchaser's Charcoal forge

Very nice knives. I've been looking at lots of stuff on the net lately and thinking about making a few. I enquired about getting some 440C and it's difficult, need to get a metre of round bar from Sydney and then have it forged flat, not cheap and a bit of an exercise. Where did you source your 1085...

Mick, yes it's very similar to your 430  I've just sold my 465 and still have my BFS. Links below. Not too many people around with a 430. Not the one for sale on eBay? I'm assessing my next yak purchase, it could be a stitch and glue ply yak or possibly another Stealth. Time and money will ...

Re: Waterproofing hunting tackle in kayaks?

I'm a kayak fisherman so deal with this issue a bit. My yak has a full length rod chute and I can fit 3 to 4 rods in there fully rigged no problem even traversing surf. I occasionally go camping, usually on flat water, so the rods can stay in the rod holders and the camping gear goes in the rod chut...

Re: Bamboo, Hard Rock Maple and Steam.

Daryl, that's a very nice looking bow. I gather the geometry of the recurve gives a lower string angle for the draw, hence you can make the bow shorter? Can you also tell me what species of bamboo you used? I have a nice stick of Canadian Rock Maple that a gentleman from Maryborough gave to me. :big...

Re: Is this timber any good for a bow?

Hamish, can you elaborate as to why they're no good? I've checked density for those species and they look okay at mid to high 600's. Elastic modulus also seems okay. I'll weigh the board and try to work out it's density.

Thanks.

Re: Is this timber any good for a bow?

Daryl, the entire board measures 90 x 35 so it could be a bit tight. If the bow blank ends up being 45 x 12 I need a 36mm board if it's cut at 30deg.

Re: Is this timber any good for a bow?

Cheers Daryl. I've edited the last pic to show the growth rings in black and what I expect is the optimal line for the back of the bow in red. This would get the growth rings at 90deg to the back. Would it be necessary to do this? Will it work fine with the growth rings at around 60deg to the back i...

Re: Is this timber any good for a bow?

Thanks Daryl. The timber was given to me by my brother-in-law, I'll ask if he knows the history of it but as he described it to me as "an unknown eucalypt" I don't think he'll have any further info. I'll cut it down and let it sit. Any thoughts on the end grain direction? And yes, I'm keen...

Is this timber any good for a bow?

Hi guys. Just want to get some advice as to whether the attached piece of timber is okay to make a bow out of. It's an unidentified eucalypt and you will see from the photos it has a bit of a bend at one end. I've marked a line at 70 inches which shows that the bulk of the bend is not a problem. Pos...

I'm by no means a bow expert but it looks pretty wide at the nocks. Might be just the photos.
