Re: my bamboo back bamboo belly recurve (photo spam)
Thank you very much daryl and bill :) the limbs are flat for their working surfaces, the tips are still quite rounded on both sides so they do not bend i'll take a closer up picture of the limbs, they were glued together roughly parallel and then shaved into a taper by eye. i also feel like it shoul...

my bamboo back bamboo belly recurve (photo spam)
so this is my all bamboo 'horse bow' recurve visual build along i didn't use power tools, so it was hard work to flatten these as much as possible, a belt sander would have been nice. i realised halfway through that perhaps my handle was on the wrong side for gluing between the two pieces, so i made...

i'll post a photo if i can make it come up well on a picture.
and i'm sure i broke it by being too rough with it, i drew it too far by hand unfortunately and heard a crack but it's a learning process and i'll be more careful next time

Re: Spotted Gum flat bow
thanks for the advice everyone, the twisting was totally fine, when it was strung. i got a tillering stick, but i've unfortunately cracked (not broken) this bow before it was even drawring 12". it started as a zigzaged pinch across the belly of the limb, i thought it was manageable but i've not...

Re: info on string making please
the two common ways to make a bowstring are endless loop and flemish twist. the endless loop relies on a specific jig in order to make a good string, and so required spending some cash. [either to buy or make] the flemish twist usually uses a simple tool to prepare the string, but it's not strictly ...

Re: Spotted Gum flat bow
this is from a sapling maybe 5inches in diameter, so after it dried i just removed the bark and split it and have tried to leave the back in its original shape, i'll scrape down a little on it for backing, but i hope to keep the growth ring untouched. here is a post i made midway through last year w...

Re: Spotted Gum flat bow
now that i've got a string on, a bit under brace height, i can see a hinge for either limb, so i'll have to work around that and make a tillering stick i suppose. the string seems to line up well too. as for the sinew, i bought some dried thankfully, but its still a pain to process it, especially wi...

Re: Spotted Gum flat bow
well i don't know if it's true of the bows draw weight, but the weight hanging in the middle weighs about 23kgs, and now moves the the handle a bit over 5, enough i think for stringing. i steamed and untwisted the limb slightly, and thinned the ends and put nocks on too. as for the sizes, in inches ...

Re: Spotted Gum flat bow
thanks woodie, they will be thinner eventually. i've penned in on the ends roughly how much to remove, i just don't want to thin them out before i know what to do about the twisting that's going on.

Spotted Gum flat bow
this is my spotted gum flatbow so far.. i posted a picture of the stave more than a year ago, i've finally got round to trying to make a working bow out of it. the current picture is of my tillering efforts with a #50 weight hanging from the centre of the handle. it's almost 5" of movement show...

Re: 2nd question for the 2nd week
i've never known that this is what people mean by target panic, and i'm puzzled as to why a light bow could cause this too. i presumed that it was more along the lines of pride before the fall, having a bad shot due to a bad mindset and the like. in aerial shooting when the target might veer off and...

static release or pull through. do you pluck the string back [or overdraw] in order to force the string out of your fingers? or do you let your fingers give way, like letting go of a heavy weight? the main difference i have noticed, by shooting, is the pull through method results in my flu flus land...

Re: cheap wooden arrrow
the most effective way to reduce the cost of your arrows would be cutting out your own arrow shafts. spining/ weighing them can be time consuming, but certainly will be cheaper if you have the tools router and drill? block and plane? one of these? lol http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=423...

i can agree most 'normal' people would consider putting in the effort knapping glass to make a point, pointless,[lol] when one could work a job for a similar amount of time and buy several metal ones. but screw them, it's really a thing of beauty, like jewelry rather than something to shoot off into...

i think i'll be aiming for 60-65 on further thought. http://www.janynfletcher.com/Arrows_New.html i found this to be the most useful article out there, and the author thinks that under spine is more effective than over spine. what i found to be interesting was that the GPI of the arrows change accor...

heavy arrow spine calculation
so i'm trying to make a set of hunting arrows. in order to have heavy arrows i'm using 100gr weights with 160gr heads. the bow in question is an uncut horsebow, probably .4" off centre, with a 14 strand 452x it is #50 @28 but only drawn to 26-27. thinking arrows need to be about 29" so the...

i think swimming is your best option personally, but how about something like tai chi. stretching might be good to, some kind of yoga. the best kind of thing for tissue repair is bloodflow, and shifting the body about could help encourage good blood circulation at least. so my advice would be to loo...

i've never used natural hemp fibre before, but i did remember reading this book online.. http://www.archerylibrary.com/books/gallice/docs/chapter04-1.html "The other material of which strings are made is hemp, and this is of two kinds, male and female. The male is thick and coarse, and conseque...

Re: Brace height vs point of aim
well flying right is usually a sign of weak arrows is it not? in terms of being underspined that is. and while i'm not certain, wouldn't increasing the brace height put more tension in the whole process? increasing the final "poundage" it seems normal to me that the shorter string would ma...

Re: first stave, Spotted gum
Thanks Daryl, the snaking was occurring edge to edge, and i've cut through it a little to straighten it up but it's still a little visible in the centre. The back of the stave seems very uneven, kinda propellor twisting to and fro, but normalising up at the tips. i'm not sure if trying to correct th...

first stave, Spotted gum
this is my first attempt at cutting out a whole stave. i've been very excited to try it and have air dried this log until it wouldn't lose weight for a month or two and now it's ready to be hacked at. i used wedges to split it, as i've decided this can be an exercise in hand tools(as i'm quite a nov...

putting up any target in a grassy field, besides flu flu aerial sooting and clout/flight shooting, can be hell especially if it's long grass. this looks good, because any miss is hopefully going to be within a few meters of the target face, even if buried. the people standing there must have confide...

This is an interesting piece of journalism by Louis Theroux regarding the state of african game hunting. this video will have expired by the 22/12/13. http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/view/77998828 sorry if people in other states have trouble viewing it, i have no idea what the restrictions on this are.
