Heavy Osage warbow
Morning all, Been a long while since I've been on here but jumped back on through the week and I'm pleased to see some interesting stuff going on! Just wanted to share a piece of work I'm progressing with at the moment. As the title suggests, a heavy Osage orange Warbow.... How heavy you ask? Target...

Re: Looks like Taxus Baccata?
There are definitely a heap of boy types that Yew works extremely well in. A replication of Otzi's bow would certainly be a challenge since the sap was removed. Lots of chaps in the Us are making steam bend recurves from Yew. Why wouldn't a Warbow happen Daryl? I'd test it for you  Would yo...

Re: Looks like Taxus Baccata?
I dare say it is Baccata Daryl. Properties are near enough to be the same in Baccata and Brevifolia but growing conditions vary the density and ring count a heap! The chaps I talk to in England that make Yew Warbows often use both English grown Yew which tends to be lighter and less dense and a lowe...

No mate, have not yet split that up but I got my hands on some full buff horns so I'm going to make a Magyar composite bow with it. May even need more yet!

Re: Laminated ELB timbers
use the 60 Min version mate. Better pot life and sets stronger. Leave your glue up a full day before you shape it if you don't have a hot box. Backings you're basically limited to bamboo if you want Australian, unless you can find Crows Ash as it will work. Other than that, American ash and Hickory ...

Wanted: Osage Stave 60+" long
Hey lads,
Keen on buying a stave of Osage orange if anyone has any available? I'd prefer a stave at least 60" long but 64-68 would be ideal.
Cheers
Colin

Re: Laminated ELB timbers
I make alot of trilaminate ELB's using Aussie woods and I'm affraid to say that it's REALLY hard to match backing and belly colours and still get a good bow... Good belly woods are things like red Ironbark, Spotty, black wattle... Hard, dense timbers that are generally dark in colour... Good backing...

Medicine wood staves I would steer clear of personally... Haven't heard good things. Ravenbeak staves are definitely quality ones.

Re: Importing yew?
Full staves are expensive for the wood and the shipping. Unfortunately that's just how it is. To ensure it comes in ok have the source take the bark off. Most folks that are selling it know how to prep it properly so they should be able to do this for you. How much are you planning on getting and wh...

Custom Yew Elb/warbow
Just posting this up to see if there is any interest at all. Ive recently purchased and received a very clean pair of Yew billets and had planned on making a warbow for myself with them. However, they are not quite thick enough for the bow I had wanted to make, so I'm offering them up for sale as a ...

Re: Osage "Character" Elb
Just a quick scrape will get it off and I'll be good to keep going.
Rings are only fairly thin so I'm not asking for much weight out of it. Around the 40-45 mark will be plenty.
Loving all the lumps and bumps!! Just looks Cool!

Re: Osage "Character" Elb
Back was sealed under a clear lacquer so I'm stripping it back and making sure it's down to one ring. If it's not I will chase it then re round the edges before tillering.
Going to be a looker if it shoots! Have a few people scratching their heads at least haha.

Here's a look at the stave guys... Lots of character in this one! Took a bit of the reflex out of one end and took the twist out of the other but added a little reflex so its more even. Osage Stave elb (360x640).jpg Next will be to take the corners down on the back a bit and give it a bit of a crown...

Osage "Character" Elb
Evening gents!! Been a little while since I've posted any of my work but I can assure you I have not stopped! I've used everything from technique to super glue.
Strongest is definitely a 2 part epoxy and a 24hr set version is best but 5 Min araldite works ok as well.
