Re: Rawhide Backed Selfbow
Greybeard, the bow was glued from two wavy billets from the same length of timber, so where any reflex was in one limb, the same spot in the other limb would be deflexed, which made the tillering difficult, as the limbs were exact opposites of one another. The limb that is seen to be bending less ac...

Re: Rawhide Backed Selfbow
Thanks fellas.
Rob, so far I've only shot it with the light carbons, but it seems to spit them out pretty fast. The only issue is that it has a little too much hand-shock for my liking, and I attribute this to the dense timber. Its currently being oiled, so I'll post some pics when its done!

How much are people paying for techniglue?
Hello
just bought myself a techniglue kit off ebay (250 ml hardener, 500 ml resin) for $58. Just want to know whether this is a standard price or I've been ripped off?

Re: Rawhide Backed Selfbow
Had to postpone the painting for a bit due to the unseasonably wet weather up here.
It's not finished, but I already like it. Wish I could post some photos but the computer isn't happy at the moment.

Re: The Last Olive Stave
Hi Scott, This one unfortunately made the very rapid journey from being a one piece bow to a three piece bow. However, I do possess half of a similar bow that blew up a few years ago. Same wood, similar dimensions, so splicing the intact halves is an option. Might just wait a while first. Would like...

Re: Rawhide Backed Selfbow
Thanks Perry, it has been a relief to see the bow slowly develop from a chunk of wood to a thing with a life of its own. The rawhide is in fact kangaroo rawhide, and was purchased from Birsall Leather. I would have gotten 4 lots of strips out of it if the strips didn't shrink in the heat. The painti...

Rawhide Backed Selfbow
Hi all, Just want to show a bow that I've been working on for the past 2 years and is very near completion. I have no clue what the timber is (every wood-worker - haha, 3 in total - I've shown it to has been unable to identify it as well. Very tight growth rings, and a dense timber that is also a pl...

Yeah I certainly would, just have to buy some techniglue and find some bamboo.
A mate of Dad's reckon it might be white stringbark?

Re: Is this Osage
I was thinking much the same thing. If I saw three of them in half and leave the fourth for a handle, that gives me a suitable length if 4 inch splices are used. because the limb tapers, each splice would have to be a different width to increase the surface area. Eg. the splice for mid-limb would be...

Re: Is this Osage
Don't think its Osage mate... the growth rings aren't distinct enough... a blind fella could count the growth rings in an osage stave  Not to mention a lucky man as well! Could still be worth sticking some bamboo on as a back and bending it tho! Keep us posted on what you do with it. . ...

Re: Is this Osage
Thanks Gazza, I think you might be right. The timber certainly fits the description of Crows Ash (flindersia australis). It is a greasy timber, but unfortunately so is Osage (or so I have heard). The pictures of the seed pods I found on google images look similar to pods I find on a tree in my stree...

Re: Is this Osage
Yeah Rod, I've just been over to Robs (Flatliner), and he reckons it might be Osage, but is more likely yellow walnut or cheesewood. Dad reckons cheesewood is another name for beefwood?

Re: The Last Olive Stave
Daryl, from memory the other half of that bow failed in a similarly spectacular way. I believe the knot present in the area of the break and the stave's high crown both contributed to the breakage. The area of that limb also had a wavy surface, which made tillering that part of the bow difficult. I ...

Is this Osage
This afternoon I found several old wooden stakes underneath the old workbench; presumably, Dad put them there a long time ago and has since forgotten. I use them for elevating the bow on the workbench while cutting along splice joints on bow billets. I scraped some of the dirty white paint from the ...

Warming the pot in preparation for firing.

The pot glowing red.
Will check it in the morning and see if it survived. This is the second pot I've fired so far, and I hope I didn't just get lucky on my first go! Joe

Primitive Fire and Pottery
I've been making friction fires for about 3 years, and recently I've taken an interest in making pottery with primitive means. If this is topic does not belong here, feel free to relocate it to a more suitable category. Both the drill and the baseboard are made from coastal hibiscus, which is what t...

Re: The Last Olive Stave
Do you know how when some bows break, you just hear a little 'tick' and then its all over, and then other times there's a huge bang, and suddenly your one piece bow is a three piece bow? Well, the latter happened today. I had got it bending almost enough to put a string on it, and was setting it up ...

Re: The Last Olive Stave
Thanks hunterguy1991. Daryl, I recall a website mentioning that the timber is used for light scaffolding and floorboards in Nepal. Its easy to understand the lack of commercial worth, as the largest trees I have seen are barely pushing 50 cm across. The well-known Youtuber Primitive Technology also ...

Finished roughing out the stave. large web.jpg Let the floor tillering begin! Doc large 2.jpg Forgot to mention the dimensions in the first post. The stave is 72" long, but I'll shorten it later. The length from the fades to the mid-limb is 2" wide, and the tips are around 10 mm. The handl...

The Last Olive Stave
When I first began making bows at the age of 10, the first tree I used was Northern Olive (chionanthus ramiflora), and is a fast growing species native to North-eastern Australia as well as quite numerous Asian nations. This was a happy coincidence, as the wood was fairly well suited to selfbows, as...

Re: Pecking and Grinding Projects
Hello I've decided to leave that axe blank for another time, and instead just resharpen a chipped celt basalt blade. This blade was made of a lower-quality material, which was why it chipped in the first place. the chippped area was not able to be completely ground out, but enough so it didnt affect...

Re: Pecking and Grinding Projects
Hello Have been chipping (haha) away at this project every now and then. I have made a basalt adze blade, which will hopefully double as a chisel or wedge. I've also made a small adze with a knapped blade for finer wood removal. Will post pictures of both next time. I had two celt blanks on the go b...

Re: Pecking and Grinding Projects
Cheers Cmoore, I have no idea about the durability of the sandstone blade. I'm also in the process of pecking and grinding a celt blade and adze blade from local basalt. These, along with the sandstone blade will be hafted on wooden handles worked with stone hand axes and chisels. The bone chisel wa...

For the past few years i have lurked in the background of this forum, asking questions and g...
